Pedaling for a good cause
Chief Dunnaeh (Rick McLean) of the Tahltan Band Council is once again tackling the beautiful but physically challenging road from Dease Lake to Telegraph Creek by bike in the name of charity. His goal this year is to raise $30,000 to support families of Tahltan members facing serious illness, enabling them to be with their loved ones undergoing treatment in urban centres.
“On June 29, I will leave Dease Lake at 9am and hopefully reach Telegraph Creek around 6pm. The past two years this ride has raised more than $20,000 to help many families from the north with added costs in medical travel. The health system we have only provides a subsidy when travelling from the north. The Tahltan Band doesn’t receive funds from the federal government for added requests, so we are reliant on fundraising, such as the bike ride to meet the community needs,” Chief McLean explains.
He will ride a locally made mountain bike from 78 Bike Co. and painted by Tahltan artist Alano Edzerza.
“My goal this year is to raise $30,000 to support our families. I very much appreciate all of the donations I have received to date. Donations can still be made at the Tahltan Band Council, referencing ‘bike ride’ or ‘special request fund,’” he says.
